Stream the New Nick Lowe Record

Posted in Other People's Work on June 23rd, 2007

Here’s a question… Who’s cooler than Nick Lowe? Nobody, right?

After a six (6!) year hiatus, the Jesus of Cool returns next week with a new album. Until the release date, the fine folks at Yep Roc are streaming the entire record for your listening pleasure. Sounds like Nick’s still in his 60’s R&B/Country mode. That’s just fine with us. . .

A few years ago, Charles and I saw Sonic Youth in New Orleans. Thurston Moore threw his Jazzmaster at us and then tackled Charles when he tried to pick it up. Naturally, my camera locked up the moment Thurston and Charles were rolling on the ground in front of the stage. Sigh.

Thurston’s got a new solo record coming out in September, and to get us all excited about it, here’s a video. Watch as Thurston gets a haircut! Thurston plays bass! Thurston destroys a Peavey Bandit! Bad Bandit!

Watch it here.

Ornette Coleman, Joe Henry, Katrina, etc.

Our friend (and Boondogs producer) Joe McMahan reports that Ornette Coleman was channeling music from another planet before collapsing on stage at Bonnaroo this weekend. Read the Jon Pareles report here.

It just so happens that news of Ornette’s collapse (he’s recovered after a brief hospital visit, btw) comes as we were composing a post re: a recent score with a direct link to Ornette. After licensing the standard “Come Rain or Come Shine” we recorded two distinct versions of the tune (one straightforward, one moody and atmospheric) for a Baton Rouge Area Foundation TV and radio campaign.

For the more atmospheric version, we borrowed heavily from the vibe of a Joe Henry recording which features Ornette Coleman… Oh yeah, we first heard about said Joe Henry record from Joe McMahan, the guy who saw Ornette collapse. . . anyway, blah blah.

Sellout Music session drummer Dylan and I had the good fortune of playing a Southern Foodways Alliance festival in Alabama a few weeks back. For the uninitiated, the SFA is part of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at Ole Miss.

Anyway, as soon as we played our gig (it was early) we made haste to track down John T. Edge, the boss of the SFA and expert in all things southern food. After a couple Bloody Marys, we convinced him to take us to lunch. It was good.

He then kindly gave us a couple of documentary shorts the SFA has produced recently. The following is an excerpt from our favorite, HOT CHICKEN:

It’s official. I’m cancelling cable TV. Full episodes of Flight of the Conchords! Thanks, HBO. DIG the Casio DG-20 guitar in the video. Ours is always a a big hit here at the studio.
