In Praise of the Casio SK-5

1986 was a big year for digital samplers. With Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Stevie Wonder’s appearance on the Cosby Show bringing the concept to the mainstream, 13 year old boys across the country were begging their parents for a sampler for Christmas. Enter the Casio SK-1 Sampling Keyboard….

Anything you sampled was played back in gloriously degraded 8 bit audio. Imagine the juevenile hours wasted. . .
When I stumbled upon the SK-1’s big brother, the SK-5, in an El Dorado pawn shop a few years ago, I had to have it. Sing “ahhhh” into the sampler and you’ve got instant Mellotron! The SK-5 has shown up on many recordings since, including these two:

Proud SK-1 owner. I had never considered the instant Mellotron option. I guess I never got past burping into it and clicking “demo.”
